UA Local 486 History


Local 486’s origin started in the late 1800’s. Steamfitters Local #61 and helpers Local #62 of the International Association amalgamated into the United Association. In 1900 the United Association chartered Plumbers Local #48 in Baltimore Maryland. In 1904 the United Association chartered Steamfitters Local #438 in Baltimore Maryland. Both locals were given the same geographical jurisdiction in Maryland.

In 1982, Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #769, in Hagerstown Maryland was merged into Steamfitters Local #438. The merger increased the geographic jurisdiction of both locals to include Washington county and the three counties of Morgan, Berkley, Jefferson in West Virginia.

In 1995, Steamfitters Local #438 and Plumbers Local #48 were consolidated. The newly created local is Plumbers & Steamfitters local #486.

In 2012, Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #782, in Seaford Delaware was merged into Plumbers & Steamfitters Local #486. The merger has increased the geographic jurisdiction. The new jurisdiction includes all of the counties on Maryland’s Eastern shore along with Sussex county Delaware.
